When do courses run?
Courses typically run over 5–6 weeks, primarily on weekends, with occasional midweek sessions. Each course includes over 20 sessions covering both sculling (two oars) and sweep rowing (one oar), focusing on technique and confidence-building.
What are the session times?
Session times are usually 11:00-14:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. Specific timings will be advised from week to week.
What does the fee include?
- All coaching sessions
- Use of boats and equipment
- Three-month club membership including insurance cover
- Optional Taster Day (3-hour introductory session)
What is a Taster Day?
A Taster Day is an optional 3-hour introductory session that allows you to experience the course before committing to the full course. It comprises an initial introduction, time on a rowing machine (ergometer), and an indoor ‘tank’ session (it does not include any on-the-water time in the first instance).
Is there a deposit required?
Yes, a £30 deposit is required to reserve your place on the course. This deposit is necessary to secure your spot.
What if I can’t make a session?
No problem! The course is flexible, and missing one or two sessions won’t hold you back. Just let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to help you catch up. Extra time can be provided to complete the course if needed.
Do I have to attend every weekend and midweek session?
Courses run on most weekends, with optional midweek evening sessions in summer. Regular weekend attendance is important – especially in the early weeks when you’re learning the basics. We can sometimes adjust for things like shift work or childcare. Attending only one day per weekend makes it harder to keep up – but we’ve accommodated that in the past. Let us know your needs and we’ll do our best to help.
Is the course only for people who want to race?
Not at all! While some go on to compete, many join simply to enjoy rowing as a recreational activity. Falcon has a large, welcoming community that supports all levels — whether you’re aiming for races or relaxed river outings. Our Touring Group, for example, enjoys longer rows and trips in stable boats to explore other rivers in the UK and beyond.
Where is the course held?
All sessions take place at Falcon Boat Club, located on Donnington Bridge Road, Oxford and other local facilities.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, close-fitting sportswear suitable for outdoor activities. Avoid loose clothing that could get caught in the equipment. Layers are recommended to adjust to changing weather conditions. Trainers are appropriate footwear. Please avoid wearing expensive or designer clothing, as rowing can be messy.
Is swimming ability required?
Yes, participants should be able to swim at least 50 meters in light clothing. This is a standard safety requirement for rowing.
